Volunteer vacancy: Kitten foster family

Every year, many stray kittens are born in the Eindhoven region and taken into animal shelters. These little fluff balls are often found without their mother, are frequently ill, and are not used to human contact. We are looking for foster families who can care for these kittens, helping them grow healthy and social so they can be adopted into loving homes.

Not all kittens are found alone, sometimes mother cats with their litters also need help. That’s why we are also looking for foster homes for mother cats and their kittens. In a foster home, these animals can receive far more attention and care than in a shelter environment.

Caring for kittens can be incredibly rewarding, but it is also intensive and sometimes emotional work. The youngest kittens need bottle feeding every 2–3 hours. Sick kittens require medication and extra care. Even older kittens that can eat independently need a lot of attention, as they are not used to people. As a foster caregiver, your role is to help them become social, affectionate house cats. This requires a significant investment of time and dedication.

What do we expect from a foster family?

  • You have a driver’s license and your own car, so you can visit a designated veterinarian when needed and pick up supplies from the shelter.
  • You have enough time to provide the necessary care and attention.
  • You are willing to foster an entire litter (usually 4–5 kittens).
  • You can monitor the health of the animals and keep basic records.
  • You use WhatsApp and regularly check your email.
  • You follow the foster guidelines and instructions from the coordinator.
  • Your own pets are fully vaccinated and vaccinations are kept up to date.
  • You have a separate room available to keep foster kittens isolated from your own pets if needed.
  • You live in one of the 15 municipalities in our service area: Bergeijk, Best, Bladel, Cranendonck, Deurne, Eersel, Eindhoven, Geldrop-Mierlo, Heeze-Leende, Nuenen, Oirschot, Reusel-De Mierden, Son en Breugel, Veldhoven, or Waalre.

Time commitment

  • Bottle-fed kittens: Require feeding every 2–3 hours, so you need to be home most of the time. This is difficult to combine with a regular job.
  • Socialization kittens: It is possible to work part-time, as they can eat and drink independently. However, they may still require unexpected vet visits.
  • Mother cats (pregnant or with kittens): Full-time work is possible, as long as you can dedicate enough time in the evenings and weekends for socialization and can visit the vet if needed.

What do we offer?

  • All necessary supplies, food, and veterinary care for foster animals
  • Guidance and support from experienced staff
  • Internal and external training opportunities
  • Free participation in the DierenLot Day twice a year
  • Meaningful and rewarding volunteer work
